NEST Housing Counselor in Waterbury, Connecticut

[JOB DESCRIPTION: NEST seeks a self-motivated individual who is eager to provide our clients with comprehensive housing counseling services, financial assessment, budgeting assistance, written action plan development, credit report explanation, casework management, workshop facilitation, community outreach, compliance adherence, client file maintenance, Fair Housing rights education, and participation in trainings and meetings including travel.

  • Provide one-on-one counseling for clients who need support with first-time homebuying, rental assistance, financial coaching, and foreclosure intervention.
  • Assess clients financial situation and assist in developing a budget and setting financial goals.
  • Produce a written action plan that promotes the clients best interests or course of action.
  • Explain and answer questions regarding credit report ratings and protection laws to the client.
  • Perform on-going casework as needed to provide service and problem-solving assistance for clients. Follow up with clients, lenders, servicers, partners, and stakeholders in accordance with program policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate homebuyer education, financial literacy education, rental education, landlord education, and foreclosure prevention workshops.
  • Outreach, coordinate, and work with appropriate government agencies, partners, lenders, and creditors, as needed, to build relationships and referrals. Conduct community outreach within our service area to attract clients to the program (see service area map).
  • Understand governing funder and compliance, prepare detailed oriented written reports, documentation, and applications as required, and ensure accuracy of data input into client tracking database.
  • Maintain client files in both electronic and hard files in accordance with organizations policies and procedures.
  • Inform clients of their Fair Housing rights. Be aware of potential Fair Housing Act violations.
  • Attend trainings and meetings. Some will require out of state travel and overnight stay(s).
  • Perform other work-related duties and responsibilities as assigned to help support all homeownership promotion and preservation programs and the organization.

Ability to travel/work in Danbury and Waterbury;

Two (2) years of college education or equivalent experience;

Proven ability to work both independently, with limited supervision, and with team workers and affiliated network;
