UTHealth is looking for a Systems Administrator to be a part of the Database & Application Support team within DCO. This team focuses on clinical, enterprise, and departmental-level application systems design, implementation, and support. Primary responsibilities include server and database administration, web and SharePoint administration, applications systems and support, systems integration and automation, and business intelligence, as well as working closely with the application owners to help with performance tuning, troubleshooting installations, and upgrades.

Position Summary:

Responsible for the day-to-day system stability, reliability, and security activities.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Utilizes appropriate procedures and processes necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of organizational servers, data systems, file structures, computer operating systems, and computer system software.

  2. You will be working with systems and database cloud support (AWS, Azure): including EC2, RDS, FSX and DynamoDB exposure. Experience with Cloud technologies and DevOps; i.e AWS, Azure, GitHub, Codebuild and pipeline.

  3. Works with Network Security Analyst to ensure the security and integrity of computer operating systems and supporting software by detecting hackers and ensuring remote access is encrypted.

  4. Ensures data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations in conjunction with the Disaster Recovery & Security Analyst.

  5. Performs basic and intermediate level shell and kernel programming and testing.

  6. Conducts studies of projected enhancements in hardware and software and presents recommendations to management.

  7. Conducts performance measurement and evaluation of the servers to ensure Service Level Agreements (SLA) are met.

  8. Implements security and disaster recovery according to established standards, policies, and guidelines.

  9. Participates in all phases of total system planning and in the generation of justifications and specifications for facility requirements and enhancements.

  10. Implements system software projects.

  11. Presents technical briefings.

  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Ability to configure and administer diverse servers and computer operating systems. Familiarity with WEB technology, database concepts, and networking.

Technical Qualifications would include:

Required:

Server Administration: Windows Server 2012+, which includes installation, configuration, security, and troubleshooting of on-prem physical servers and virtual servers. Both on-prem and cloud support knowledge are needed.

Client/Server Application support: Backend systems support for client-server applications. Understanding of web technologies such as IIS and Apache as well as CMS suites such as WordPress, Umbraco, Moodle, etc. Understanding of SSL certificate implementation.

Infrastructure Skills: Basic understanding of core infrastructure components such as TCP/IP networking, DNS, Active Directory, Firewalls, and Database technologies.

Organizational Skills: Ability to understand project methodology and project management. Use of Microsoft Teams and M365 tools such as Planner.

Communication and Teamwork: Ability to communicate both written and orally to a wide variety of audiences. Must have the ability to think logically when solving problems, as well as implement workable solutions. Must be able to resolve all existing problems and newly discovered ones to move the project towards completion.

Must be able to work both in a team environment and as a self-contributor to meet all project-related goals.

Candidates should have a broad scope of technical capabilities that will enable them to handle all aspects of application management as well as communicate and discuss technical design issues and problem resolution with Application and System Administrators.

Must be able to collaborate with vendors and clients, both internal to IT and external, to understand the needs to scope projects and system environments to satisfy the overall objective of any project.

Availability: UTHealth System Administrators support a variety of mission-critical and 24x7 patient care-focused systems that are required to be readily available. To support these systems, there are many times that scheduled and non-scheduled after-hours work is required. There is also an on-call rotation that has been scheduled months in advance to help triage issues after hours and on holidays.

Additional skills that would be a plus for this position:

  • Experience with systems and database cloud support (AWS, Azure): including EC2, RDS, FSX and DynamoDB exposure. Experience with Cloud technologies and DevOps, i.e., AWS, Azure, GitHub, Codebuild, and pipeline.

  • SCCM knowledge and experience: Basic understanding and client troubleshooting.

  • SharePoint Administration: both On-Prem and SharePoint Online

  • Scripting/Programming Technologies: PowerShell, .NET, Java, AWS CloudFormation, Terraform & Python

  • Knowledge of clinical systems such as EPIC, DICOM Imaging systems, and Digital Dentistry systems.such as EPIC, AllScripts, CPS, Axium and EClinical Works.

  • Knowledge of monitoring tools such as IDERA SQL Diagnostic Manager and Monyog for MySQL, Dynatrace as well as SolarWinds – Server and App Monitor would be a plus.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree, training in information technology, or related experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

One (1) year of experience in information technology support and systems administration in diverse environments. Preferred experience with the network and server hardware, software, and security tools that UTHSC-H has deployed in its information technology infrastructure.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
