The Opportunity

As a proven thought leader and subject matter expert in marketing and advertising design, the Director of Design Creative will be accountable for the development and performance of USAA’s In-House Creative Agency’s Design Creative Team, ensuring best-in-class creative through purposeful coaching and mentoring of each team member as well as hands-on execution of creative concepts and design deliverables when needed.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position is based in the following location: San Antonio TX.

What you'll do:

  • Responsible for building and managing a high performing team, including individual development, performance management, training, development, and coaching within their creative discipline, specific to the directors' area of functional creative expertise (e.g. design, copy, or video).

  • Identifies and implements industry best practices, tools, and processes for creative practice and operations within their area of functional creative expertise (e.g. design, copy, or video).

  • Assigns self to appropriate projects in the role of an Associate Creative Director, practicing creative discipline and supplementing creative capacity within their area of functional creative expertise (e.g. design, copy, or video) as needed.

  • Manages creative assignments and monitors capacity & workflow for team members.

  • Ensures creative and brand standards are met on all campaigns and projects.

  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.

  • 8 years of progressive related experience within the creative development, design, copy, production and media planning functions and demonstrated ability to integrate and coordinate internal and external resources.

  • 3 years of direct team lead or management experience building and leading high-performing creative teams across relevant disciplines and channels, managing major initiatives and delivering results within a complex matrix environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to find, learn, leverage, and teach creative industry best practices and emerging trends to develop and implement successful creative practices and teams.

  • Experience collaborating with key resources and stakeholders, influencing decisions and managing work to achieve strategic goals.

  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in providing clear, actionable, and -as needed - tough feedback and guidance for functional and overarching career development of creative staff.

  • Successful experience supporting senior level creative leadership.

  • Expert level engaging, storytelling/selling presentation skills.

What sets you apart:

  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in developing, and overseeing the development of, compelling and on-brand visual designs across all relevant channels and tactics in support of creative platforms and concepts.

  • Proven experience in building and growing the advertising/marketing design discipline within in-house and/or agency creative teams for Fortune 500 brands.

  • Demonstrated experience & expertise in supporting and executing to the creative ideation and concepting process, from active participation in brainstorms and concept ideation to design asset delivery.

  • Expert experience using conceptual and strategic thinking to balance creativity and innovation with business objectives.

  • Experience designing, evaluating, and applying brand guidelines.

  • US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner.

What we offer:

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $120,550 - $230,400 .

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
