Together, we work towards equipping each student with the tools they need to become lifelong learners and valuable contributors to both their local community and the global society.FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF UNIT: The Executive Director of Science is a critical part of an integrated team of instructional professionals in the Division of Teaching and Learning, which supports the schools of the Rochester City School District. He/she exercises significant discretion and independent decision-making authority, and advises the Chief Academic Officer regarding policies and protocols developed to ensure that all schools are addressing the diverse educational needs of all students. The Executive Director provides intellectual and administrative leadership by catalyzing, leading, and participating in collaborative, interdisciplinary research and action-oriented results to support student achievement. He/she works closely with Principals and school buildings, and is held accountable for their schools’ success in meeting cumulative performance targets in all critical areas while engendering high levels of Principal satisfaction with services provided. The Executive Director will work collaboratively with various Central Office departments to identify and select highly qualified, exceptional teachers; collect and analyze data for instructional improvements; seek external funding; and meet all Federal, State, and funding sources reporting requirements. The Executive Director will demonstrate a collaborative work ethic, supportive commitment to high levels of performance for students and adults, flexibility in daily routines, and full participation in a culture of equity and accountability. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement, monitor, review, and coordinate Science and Engineering-related curricula and programming for grades K-12, including the adoption of instructional materials in alignment with resources and assessments.

  • Provide leadership to schools and individual teachers to promote continued improvements in Science educational programs, through classroom modeling, coaching, and professional learning and support.

  • Develop short-term and long-range curricular, instructional, and programmatic goals for the Department.

  • In collaboration with the Office of Professional Learning, assist schools in developing professional learning plans that incorporate Science.

  • Provide professional development and guidance to principals and teachers in collaboration with leadership from the Bilingual Education and World Languages and Special Education Departments on service delivery and instructional best practices for students with special needs (including Special Education students, Gifted Students, English Language Learners, and at-risk student populations) to improve student achievement and accelerate student learning.

  • Work with cross-district committees to facilitate the completion of district curriculum documents.

  • In conjunction with individual classroom teachers, administrators and school communities, access, review and apply a range of data in designing appropriate and effective intervention strategies for students potentially experiencing academic difficulties.

  • Work with other instructional directors in providing schools with learning opportunities for creation of high functioning team structures that support meaningful collaboration.

  • Participate in professional development to assure that the district is continually abreast of new and promising practices.

  • Convene and facilitate an RCSD subject area council of representative teachers and administrators.

  • Consider and adapt to the effects of social and technological developments on teaching and learning.

  • Work with the Office of Parent Engagement to increase parent engagement understanding of Science and align support services for students.

  • Unify diverse views of students, staff, parents and community members into a cohesive vision for instruction in Science.

  • Maintain communication with local, state, and national councils on professional issues to support continuous assessment of course offerings and knowledge of national trends to disseminate to appropriate personnel.

  • Provide leadership and guidance to school administrators, teachers, and staff regarding the design, delivery, and assessment of curriculum, instructional practices, and resources.

  • Lead and/or facilitate initiatives within the Division of Teaching and Learning, including amongst Instructional Directors and School Chiefs, and across other departments within the district, including the planning, articulation, and monitoring of new program development.

  • Apply expertise and think creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to problems that can be complex and non-routine.

AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Meet with teachers, administrators and schools on a regular basis each week to ensure national and state academic standards and performance indicators are maintained and provide documented evidence of site visits, supports provided, observations, and findings.

  • Plan, direct, and supervise Science and Engineering educational programs in accordance with district and state policies and applicable laws.

  • In collaboration with Instructional Directors, implement a systemic process, which includes the provision of data informed, research-based instruction and interventions to support the achievement of struggling learners.

  • Provide professional development tools and protocols that help principals and other staff to strengthen their instructional knowledge in order to support teaching and learning for all students.

  • Assesses carefully the pedagogical details of the School Comprehensive Education Plans (SCEPs) and other school improvement plans in every school, supporting principals in setting key objectives for learning and measurable benchmarks.

  • Support school leadership teams to develop instructional plans for Science by assessing classroom instruction, analyzing assessment data, and identifying the instructional needs of the school.

  • Develop and revise citywide assessments in collaboration with district teachers and organize scoring sessions in alignment with the implementation of the instructional management system.

  • Prepare and manage the departmental budget including oversight; approval of expenditures; and monitoring.

  • Oversee purchases and administer the distribution of all departmental materials and services, and manage all departmental resources.

  • Implement department goals and objectives annually, provide support and assistance to the Chief Academic Officer in the implementation of Division goals and objectives, and performs all other tasks and duties as assigned.

FUNCTIONAL TASKS OF THIS ROLE:

  • Provide training workshops to school communities to enhance knowledge and facilitation skills in delivery of job-embedded professional learning.

  • Provide training to school administration in collaboration with instructional directors to enhance administrators’ knowledge in building collaborative cultures reflective of learning communities.

  • Orchestrate, implement, and provide technical assistance for K-12 Science, Technology and Engineering programs to teachers.

  • Lead collaborative initiatives in support of developing professional learning communities within and beyond the context of schools and the District.

  • Implement, monitor and update the Science Department website.

  • Collaborate with various departments, businesses and organizations to integrate Science, Technology, and Engineering and literacy for all students.

  • Coordinate opportunities for schools to become deeply knowledgeable about the communities they serve and the implications of children's cultural assets and needs.

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATION:

  • 10 years of effective teaching, coaching, and leadership experience as evidenced by enhanced student achievement

  • New York State Teacher Certification in Science

  • New York State Certification for School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in curriculum creation, planning and facilitating professional learning, and implementation of effective instructional strategies for all grade levels and audiences.

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, expertise in oral and written communication, and strong interpersonal skills including giving and receiving constructive feedback.

  • Demonstrated ability to integrate multiple functions and function effectively with all levels of management throughout the District

  • Demonstrated expertise in effective systems, structures and instructional models that support teaching and learning; financial management in support of schools; and regulations that govern district-level decision making.
