No experience is required for our entry-level title of Central Sterile Processing Associate!

UPMC Presbyterian is hiring full-time Central Sterile Processing Associates, with multiple levels available including Central Sterile Processing Techs at the entry-level and Sr. level. UPMC Presbyterian’s Central Sterile department is a fast paced, controlled environment. We process an average of 77,000 instrument sets per year! We boast a robust career ladder and opportunities for advancement with a certification. This position requires a rotating schedule.

Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the career ladder, based on their individual experience and education.

Purpose:

To perform those duties necessary for the proper decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, distribution and documentation of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment according to established procedures. Assist in the daily operation of the department by resolving routine questions. Assists with the orientation of new personnel. Assume charge responsibilities in the absence of the department coordinator. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Responsibilities:

  • Conforms and adheres to department policies concerning decontamination, sterile processing, infection control and safety

  • Prepares and assembles surgical tray and equipment following established tray listings for issue, storage, or further processing.

  • Monitors, reads, documents, and interprets all parameters for all types of sterilizers to ensure proper function.

  • Assesses supplies required for prescribed standard surgical procedures and sets up case carts. Maintains inventory, collects, disassembles, inspects, cleans, disinfects and reassembles all instrument trays patient care equipment.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as may be required to meet emergency situations.

  • Assumes responsibility for a surgical specialty ensuring that instrumentation is available and maintained in optimum working condition.

  • Cleans and decontaminates reusable equipment, instruments, and supplies, manually and mechanically.

  • Maintains a working knowledge of, and is able to effectively troubleshoot, all decontamination/sterilization equipment.

  • Displays awareness of cost containment in the organization of work by using economy in time, motion and material

  • Develops and improves skills through initiative, attendance and participation at educational programs

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent.

  • Two years of Central Sterile Processing experience required.

  • OR Graduate of an accredited surgical technician/sterile processing program with one year of central sterile processing experience required. Instrumentation and Equipment Specialized Knowledge.

  • Must complete 10 hours of continuing education to remain qualified as a Central Sterile Technician on an annual basis.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution or Certified Registered Central Service Technician or International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management certification required in our PA and NY facilities (MD is excluded) within 18 months of hire.

  • Staff employed prior to December 28, 2020 are grandfathered and do not need to obtain the certification.

  • Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution OR Certified Registered Central Service Technician OR International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management
