Manages/supervises all aspects of the Rankin Library operation including budgeting, scheduling, collection development, reference, circulation, instruction and outreach. Manages/supervises 1 library staff.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION This position oversees and coordinates all functions of the Campus Library including staffing, public services (reference and circulation services), collection development, serials, outreach, instruction and the physical environment. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE This position requires a Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program and three years’ experience in the field. Unofficial transcripts must be submitted with resume and official transcripts submitted upon hire. Also requires effective oral and written communication skills; the ability to supervise, delegate and evaluate professional librarians and staff; ability to initiate and maintain effective working relationships; knowledge of library and standard office software programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Supervises staff and student workers in the reference and circulation activities of the library and makes operational decisions affecting this work. Helps maintain an effective public service desk at which patrons receive courteous, prompt, and efficient service; assists in maintaining a safe, appropriate library atmosphere by supervising student/patron conduct, engaging in general housekeeping, and promoting a favorable college environment.

  2. Provides quality reference consultations to patrons in various situations including in person, Chat, phone or email.

  3. Provides general orientations & formal instruction for specific courses and/or class assignments through in-person or online formats.

  4. Provides outreach to faculty and students including coordinating events, exhibits, social media and other activities at the library that engage and promote learning and reading interest; acts as advocate for the campus library to administrators, faculty, students, in promoting the library services and determining the campus’ needs.

  5. Assumes primary responsibility for the library’s collection development and weeding and also assists in materials selection and discards for the reference and serials collection.

  6. Responsible for the library’s annual care & planning including overseeing goal setting, budgeting, spending, and equipment and furniture upkeep; ensures program goals are executed and documented appropriately.

  7. Maintains and saves circulation reports generated within the ILS (Integrated Library System) software. 8. Report lost items to Technical Service librarian so that the ILS database can be accurate of holdings.

  8. Ensures Inter Library Loans and transits are processed timely and accurately.

10.Assists the technical assistant(s) with the serials control records and checking in items utilizing the ILS (Integrated Library System) software.

11.Trains, supervises and evaluates library staff and student workers. Ensures that staff & student workers have the training and supervision needed to effectively and efficiently perform their job duties.

12.Maintains or ensures maintenance of appropriate library files and reports (including the newsletter & Annual Report), daily, weekly and monthly statistics, accurate record of inventory [materials, hardware, furnishings], cash, deposits, and other necessary paperwork.

13.Schedules and teaches the library instruction and orientation sessions.

14.Oversees the shelving and shelf-reading of materials to ensure shelves are orderly and clean; oversees general housekeeping of all library areas.

15.Ensures professional growth by attending PDI courses, workshops, conferences.

16.Actively participates in library and campus committees as assigned.

17.Works early mornings and evenings as needed to make the library & resources available for faculty and student use.

18.Performs other duties as may be assigned by the appropriate authority, including assisting other branch or campus libraries.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position supervises staff and student workers and the activities of the Campus Library.
