NJEDA Historic Preservation Intern in New Jersey

Overview

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Historic Preservation, provides support and assistance in daily operations of the department . Supports Director and Sr. Project Officer with overall program tasks including preparation and distribution of promotional and guidance materials associated with department’s programs . Assist with coordination of all activities associated with evaluation of applications for department programs including preparation of review documents and coordinating and moderating of meetings .

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the dissemation of technical information regarding EDA’s Historic Preservation programs including the Historic Property Reinvestment Program.

  • Work collaboratively with NJDEP’s Historic Preservation and DCA’s NJ Historic Trust as needed for the coordination and development of tasks associated with EDA’s historic preservation programs.

  • Actively participate in the collection /updating of data , and the preparation and maintenance of reports and databases, as needed to track and document information and statistics regarding all programs run by EDA’s Historic Preservation Department.

  • Provide support to Department staff and Selection Committee members during evaluation period for Historic Property Reinvestment Program .

  • Help p rovide general guidance, and information regarding EDA’s historic preservation programs and services to potential applicants, consultants, officials, municipalities, counties and partnering organizations .

  • Provide assistance in outreach activities to promote the Historic Property Reinvestment Program and any other historic preservation program and/or product being rolled out by the EDA.

  • Works closely with sector leaders on industry issues, initiatives and policy discussions

  • Performs research on competitor state polices and programs

  • Promotes teamwork and communication to encourage an interactive, cooperative, collaborative, and customer focused work environment among division, EDA staff, and external customers.

  • Performs other duties and special projects, as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of Historic Preservation industry, including general knowledge of:

  • Federal and State Historic Tax Credit Programs

  • National and New Jersey Register of Historic Places

  • Secretary of the Interior’s Standards

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; proficient in grammar, spelling and editing; and foster communications with business professionals and EDA staff

  • Ability to prioritize workload, must be highly organized, detail-oriented, handle various tasks simultaneously and work independently within limited time constrains with little or no supervision

  • Ability to analyze data, prepare data visualization materials and other relevant documentation for the sector leaders

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and deal effectively and diplomatically with business professionals and EDA staff

  • Demonstrates respectful behavior and promotes teamwork and communication to encourage an interactive, cooperative, collaborative and customer focused work environment among division, EDA staff and external customers. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new software packages

    Required Qualifications

    Education and Experience Requirements

  • Enrollment in an accredited degree program with a concentration in Historic Preservation, History, Architecture, or closely related field.

    Position Requirements

  • Foreign degrees/transcripts must be evaluated by a reputable evaluation service at your own expense and must be submitted prior to a start date . If this cannot be provided within 21 days of an offer the offer will be rescinded.

  • Must comply with the “New Jersey First Act” which requires employees hired after September 1, 2011 to reside in New Jersey. Non-New Jersey resident employees must relocate to New Jersey within one year of their date of hire and provide proof of residency to Human Resources.
