Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Business Manager for the department of Surgery at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.Under the direction of the Chairman of Surgery and the Sr. Director of Administration-Surgery. The Senior Business Manager is responsible for the financial and business management of each assigned research project/area. The Senior Business Manager oversees the day-to-day administrative and business operations areas within each department/division as assigned. The Sr. Business Manager work closely with the Sr. Director of Administration of all projects, grants, contracts and related functions associated with the faculty, clinical team, staff, leadership and health system counterparts. Ensures that all predetermined metrics, goals, efficiencies and milestones are met with the goal of improving access to care, fiscal performance and satisfaction. Interfaces with dept research staff, grants office, oncore staff, IRB and other entities a needed to follow up on research projects. Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Collaborate with all departmental/divisional, hospital, system and Rutgers staff as needed to meet the goals of the department or division.
  • Maintain oversight on all contracts, submissions, budgets and expense spending to meet budget targets.
  • Creates effective work plans and works closely with staff to ensure compliance with all research activities, accurate documentation of expenses and submissions for revenue reimbursement.
  • Oversees and reviews research submissions to ensure we meet all timelines and obtain the necessary info from the varies entities as required.
  • Meets with faculty to review existing budgets and map out goals and strategies for the new fiscal year.
  • Maintains relationship with primary equipment vendors to ensure timely services as needed, maintains contracts and communication both internal and external as it relates to specialty equipment.
  • With Finance, analyzes fund balances to determine operating needs, staff allocation, carry-over requests, projections, and close-outs of research/grant awards.
  • Participates in strategic planning initiatives within the department/division in order to meet performance and growth targets.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, Health Administration, or a related field plus five (5) years of related experience involving research and sponsored programs administration, budgets, and financial analyses, ideally in an academic / medical center environment.
  • Two (2) years of experience in supervisory or a managerial role.
  • Equivalent experience, education and/or training may be substituted for the education requirements on a year for year basis.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Required to have knowledge and expertise of Federal and State agency regulations, policies, procedures and laws applicable to sponsored program activities; a deep understanding of proposal development, finding funding, Institutional Review Board regulations, clinical procedures and protocols, accounting/finance, and other grant related activities.
  • The ideal candidate will have excellent business acumen, accounting skills, detail oriented, and excellent organizational skills.
  • Extensive experience with research and sponsored programs administration, budgeting, and financial analyses, ideally in an academic environment.
  • Proficient in computer applications at an advanced level (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be able to resourceful by maximizing the utilization of the Rutgers resources.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with computer-based accounting systems.
  • The ability to supervise in a unionized environment.
