Job Summary:

Based in Germany and reporting to the Senior Project Manager of Manufacturing & Technology, the Germany Country Manager will be responsible for representing Bechtel in this new market. The Country Manager is responsible for establishing and maintaining a Bechtel presence in Germany, leading and developing a comprehensive external stakeholder engagement strategy, maintaining strong relationships with Bechtel’s customers, partners, and other stakeholders, and providing support to project personnel and functional managers in support of Bechtel’s operations in Germany.

Leading by example and promoting Bechtel’s Vision, Values and Commitments, strategic priorities and overall Bechtel culture of ethics, safety, quality, and diversity & inclusion. Responsible for the day-to-day management and operations of Bechtel Germany’s office and support required by M&T projects awarded in Germany and Eastern Europe.

Communicates regional and national regulatory matters to support overall coordination of business activities and serves as an external-facing representative for Bechtel, including with business associations and the media. Recommends and approves relevant local policies, strategies and procedures for the Germany office and undertakes assignments requested by the Senior Project Manager of M&T. Focus areas for such assignments include coordinating interfaces with local, state, and federal-level officials, supporting the recruitment of construction management professionals and skilled construction craft, and building/maintaining relationships with the national, regional and local supply chain companies supporting Bechtel in the respective projects. Knowledge of German and EU policies about semiconductor manufacturing along with the semiconductor supply chain would be highly desirable.

The Country manager will provide functional and operational direction to managerial and office personnel and maintains contacts with local organizations and government officials as appropriate for information on business opportunities, conditions, statutory changes, local practices. The position is responsible for maintaining regular engagement with the Senior Project Manager for M&T, Bechtel’s project execution team for German projects, Functional Managers within M&T and business development managers for coordinating hiring as well as providing updates on business activities, strategic planning, and ongoing development in Germany.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Acts on behalf of Bechtel, in accordance with designated authority, in all matters related to business, finance, and public affairs in the assigned area.

  • Regularly advises Senior Management, Marketing and Business Development Managers on developments in Germany that may impact the Bechtel Group of Companies.

  • Supports Bechtel activities in key private and public sector markets through the development of business community contacts and the media.

  • Develops key contacts with German government entities to establish Bechtel as an effective resource for economic development planning and develops an awareness of the government’s priorities and major project interests.

  • Supervises project communications lead and in close coordination with project leadership and the customer, leads internal and external communications efforts.

  • Assists General Business Units (GBU) with advice on bid/no bid decisions, preparation and presentation of proposals, necessary follow-up on proposals to point of decision by the client.

  • Monitors and reports on economic, political, and industrial developments that impact Bechtel’s interests. Advises on local business and social customs.

  • Reviews and manages project plans during the proposal and subsequent planning phases.

  • Formulates and recommends policies, plans, programs, and procedures for local and project execution operations.

  • Directs all office activities and evaluates results against established objectives and policies; initiates corrective action when necessary. Provide services to other Bechtel units, as needed.

  • Follows up on completed studies and engineering-construction projects to maintain continuity with clients and to identify opportunities for new work.

  • Coordinates with Senior Project Manager of M&T in the development of plans and strategies involving Germany.

  • Identifies major project opportunities and advises divisions on strategies for obtaining new business.

  • Follows up on projects to maintain continuity with clients and to identify opportunities for new work.

  • Advises on the use of business consultants, construction contractors and the general supply chain in assigned area

  • Prepares an annual review of the engineering-construction market in Germany and makes recommendations for enhancing Bechtel’s position.

  • Leads preparations for visits of senior Bechtel executives to Germany.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, Construction, Business Administration, other relevant fields, or equivalent qualification.

  • 10+ years of experience in a senior leadership role with demonstrated increasing responsibility, over time with a complex, international and multi-cultural organization

  • Experience in project management, business development, commercial / contract management

  • Experience interfacing with senior executives and government officials

  • Experience establishing strategic objectives for large organizations

  • Has established network and relationships with local and organizational leaders in Germany

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in German and English

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge and understanding of German commercial, contractual, regulatory, and operational requirements to do business in the engineering and construction sectors.

  • Knowledge of all aspects of corporate marketing and business development to establish new business opportunities in the designated international area.

  • Knowledge of international business trends and policies, and experience in the assigned area, with established contacts required.

  • Experience in bid negotiations and international contractual terms.

  • Bilingual (German and English), with effective communication skills in both languages.
