SEASONAL GREENHOUSE STEWARD / COMMUNITY GARDEN WORKER

DEPARTMENT:Parks Department SALARY:$14.00 HOURS:7am - 3pm

DEFINITION Maintains and takes of plants inside the greenhouse as well as takes care of the community garden and surrounding beds.

A. Hand Tools (Shovels, Rakes, Broom, Pruners, Hand Saw, Loppers)

B. Power tools (Blowers, Hedge Trimmers, Weed Whips, Push Mowers)

C. PPE

D. 1 gal sprayer

MEF greenhouse, community garden

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees are constantly moving, bending, stooping, and lifting for long periods of time. High dexterity is required for weeding, pruning, and planting. Must have enough endurance to work in heat or cold and operate power blowers, hedge-trimmers, and push mowers for extended periods of time without rest. Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted.

ENVIRONMENTAL / WORKING CONDITIONS

Employee is subject to all types of weather, loud noises from power tools, dirt, dust, and pollen from plants.

ESSENTIALS FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Employees perform a variety of landscape tasks utilizing horticulture knowledge. Tasks include: Weeding, cleaning, planting, pruning, and any other tasks requested by Landscape Manager

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

A. Maintain clean and orderly landscape around and in greenhouse by: Keeping raised garden beds and surrounding flower beds free of weeds and unwanted plants, making sure plants are watered adequately, deadheading, and pruning

B. Plant flowers and vegetables in designated raised garden beds and in community garden

C. Keep sidewalks clean of debris left by plants, and people using leaf blowers

D. Identifying pests and fungi on plants inside the greenhouse, and using appropriate chemicals, insecticides and fungicides, on plants, fertilization when applicable

E. Propagating, repotting plants, starting seeds, thinning seedlings, and labeling plants

F. Clean and maintain equipment

G. General housekeeping of the greenhouse

H. Any job requested by Landscape Manager or Supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS

A. Drivers License Required

B. High School Diploma or Equivalent

C. Horticulture knowledge and maintaining a garden preferred but not required
