We have an exciting opportunity for a Organic Geochemist to join the team with our Science & Exploration Division.

The Organic Geochemist will:

  • Work on Jacobs JETSII contract in support of the Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science Directorate (ARES) at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC) in the field of Astromaterials and planetary science, while providing support for NASA missions.

  • Perform analyses of organic compounds and associated matrix materials.

  • Prepare samples for analyses.

  • Develop new procedures for sample analysis and sample preparation.

  • Participate in collaborative research with a diverse team of internal and external scientists.

  • Support the growth of ARES and provide service to local and external users.

  • Develop new lines of research and apply for competed research grants.

  • Assist with routine upkeep and maintenance of ARES facilities.

  • Summarize, communicate, and publish quantitative scientific results.

  • Actively participate in safety programs.

  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Here’s what you’ll need :

Requisition Qualifications:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • A BS degree and a minimum of 2-5 years of experience are typically required.

  • Experience preparing samples for organic analyses.

  • Ability to learn new skills and laboratory procedures.

  • Minimum 3 years experience analyzing samples using mass spectrometry techniques.

  • Experience with using and developing advanced mass spectrometry techniques, for the analysis of organic molecules, including, but not limited to LC-MS.

  • Track record of publication of scientific results in the peer-reviewed literature and presentation of research results at scientific meetings and conferences.

  • Experience with GC-MS or GC-IRMS a plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to secure funding through competitive research proposals is a plus.

Requisition Preferences:

  • PhD in planetary science, geology, material science, chemistry, or related discipline from an accredited college or university.

  • Experience with electron beam techniques (e.g., SEM, TEM).

  • Experience with experimental synthesis and modification of soluble and insoluble organic molecules.

  • Experience in planetary science is a plus.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).

Equipment and Machines

Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).

Attendance

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
