Assistant Vice President/Dean of Students

Description

The Assistant Vice President/Dean of Students provides senior and executive level leadership within the Division of Students Affairs for student services and conduct, promoting and ensuring a sense of connection to the campus community. Implements holistic student success initiatives through oversight of the Dean of Students office, Student Housing and Residential Life, Military and Veteran Services, Counseling and Mental Health Center, Recreation and Wellness Center, and Health Services. Serves as the Divisional liaison to campus partners, and external and community leaders to build and foster relationships.

Duties:

  • Provides leadership, guidance, oversight and implementation of the University’s community standards and conduct, CARE team, education and outreach programs, health and well-being initiatives, student fee advisory committee, and on-campus living.

  • Provides administrative and budgetary oversight and overall supervision and professional development of staff. Manages personnel related issues for the following departments: Dean of Students office, Student Housing and Residential Life, Military and Veteran Services, Counseling and Mental Health Center, Recreation and Wellness Center, and Health Services.

  • Responsible for utilizing and creating data for campus and divisional assessment efforts, both qualitative and quantitative, to actively and consistently assess and evaluate the effectiveness of programs, activities and engagement efforts within the Division and across the campus.

  • Serves as the Divisional liaison to campus partners, Deans, faculty, staff, external and community leaders to build and foster relationships.

  • Serves on University and divisional level committees, working directly with UHCL College Deans and faculty to develop positive working relationships throughout the University, developing initiatives to enhance the campus community and conduct standards.

  • Represents the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Division of Student Affairs during evenings and weekends and special events. Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  1. Doctoral degree in higher education, educational administration, higher education leadership, counseling/student services, a teaching discipline aligned with student affairs or higher education administration.

  2. Minimum eight years of demonstrated progressive leadership experience in student affairs, student conduct and/or co-curricular learning with at least five years of supervisory experience.

  3. Must have strong budgetary skills as well as strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. Must have excellent public relations skills and ability to collaborate with various constituencies. Must be able to build relationships across campus with faculty, staff, and students.

  4. Established ability to work with and advocate for traditionally undeserved students and to support faculty and staff to meet the needs of these students in a higher education environment.

  5. Ability to create and maintain a variety of records, reports and files and to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously. Ability to take initiative for projects and development of services within the office, and coordinate initiatives among five distinct departments.

Desired:

Experience managing and supervising multiple departments/units within Student Affairs.
