GE Vernova Principal Engineer – Power Systems Modeling in Greenville, South Carolina

Job Description Summary

The Principal Engineer position is responsible for leading consulting and advisory engagements across the electric power industry with a focus on transmission-related and power systems planning projects, as well as supporting other GE business initiatives related to power systems equipment and services. The ideal candidate will demonstrate accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives in the field of Power Systems analysis and Grid Code compliance. The position will also include leveraging existing databases and modeling tools to perform power system simulations. The candidate will have experience with transmission system planning, evaluation project work and plant grid code testing plans; possess experience with power system simulation tools like PSLF, PSSE, and ETAP amongst others; and have strong technical writing and presentation skills for proposals, study reports, and professional speaking engagements with customers and stakeholder groups around the globe.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Identify, develop, evaluate, and introduce engineering solutions to meet near term and long-range engineering needs & objectives

  • Provide technical leadership & consultation on product challenges throughout the business including suppliers, field engineers, CTH & Chief’s office to align processes

  • Strong knowledge of Industry recognized codes & standards as well as working knowledge of electrical installation practices .

  • Lead and provide key technical direction to large projects with critical business impact.

  • Maintain an active role in developing and defining the state-of-the-art technical specialty in order to anticipate, apply, adapt or develop technologies for product introduction, quality, performance, cost improvements and problem resolution.

  • Hands on experience with analyzing and solving complex generator stability cases during grid connected operations & excitation/AVR.

  • Collaborate with cross functional teams in tuning core controls related to a prime mover, supporting alignment to GGOV1 – related to RoCoF, MBL, LSFM, etc.

  • Chair design reviews for reliability, performance and safety and compliance type programs for overall plant, including equipment level detail reviews such as GCB, GSUT, LV/MV SWGR, HV SWYD, DC & AC UPS, Synchronizing / transfer system, and Generator system s.

  • Drive effectiveness with Standard Work and apply our Lean principals with key stakeholders in development.

  • Review of overall plant level system studies such as: protection relaying schemes & coordination, SC , load flow ,transient stability, and reactive power capability analysis to meet the intent of the end users’ requirements.

  • Support other GE businesses, internal & external customers, and suppliers as required.

  • Provide technical consultation to cross-functional teams throughout the business to improve or resolve manufacturing, product center, supplier, or field issues.

  • Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through the analysis, preparation and presentation of technical data to internal and external GE customers using reports, records, and letters.

  • Use knowledge and expertise to market winning proposals in anticipation of business product needs.

  • Prepare invention disclosures to protect technology that gives the business a competitive advantage, as well as protecting the intellectual property rights of the company.

  • Provide technical guidance, direction and training to new and experienced engineers, specialists, technicians and co-ops.

  • Conduct economic and/or engineering system studies related to production cost modeling, reliability analysis, stability analysis, power market forecasting, and integrated resource planning.

  • Coach providing p ower system analysis, including quantitative and analytical modeling, simulation, and evaluation of power systems and markets.

  • Leverage existing databases and modeling tools to perform power system simulations and field test plans to verify country specific grid code compliance. Support and mentor team members to increase fidelity and accuracy of existing models.

  • Proactively seek out new opportunities and study work by responding to Requests for Proposals from grid operators, utilities, developers, and other industry organizations.

  • Support GE businesses and customers in the areas of renewable integration, distributed energy resources, energy storage, new product initiatives, and challenges to the utility business model.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science

  • A minimum 8 additional years of experience in an engineering capacity with expert knowledge in power system operations, modeling and simulations, generation and transmission planning.

Desired Characteristics

  • Good understanding of drive train system with respective machine, excitation, prime mover models & relate to digital representation in PSCAD, PSSE, PSLF etc.

  • Capability to perform Generator & Plant protection system reviews and drive technical reliability and performance in fault detection systems within a given plant or system, not limited to generator grounding systems.

  • Solid understanding of power generation products and drive train influence to performance and compliance of various Knowledge of Codes and Standards applicable to Gas Turbine Packaging

  • Participate in Operability reviews

  • Demonstrated leadership in influencing and driving new technologies launch

  • Experience in planning and execution of complex analyses relevant to electric power systems and generation facilities

  • Experience in Application Engineering and Project Execution

For U.S. based candidates only, for purposes of complying with U.S. pay transparency requirements, the base pay range for this position is $140,700.00 - 234,400.00 USD Annual. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, geographic location, and skill set. This position is also eligible for a 15% annual performance bonus. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%,120% or 130% of salary in certain areas of the USA.
