About the Department

The College Study Abroad office oversees a dynamic and growing portfolio of undergraduate international programs, which are a distinctive and sought-after component of the undergraduate experience. Through a diverse range of faculty-led programming in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East, College students can fulfill general education and major requirements in a variety of disciplines in stimulating international locations. In addition to managing our signature faculty-led programs, the Study Abroad office offers direct enrollment programs through our international exchange partner institutions and consortia memberships, as well as a number of student grant programs. Together, these initiatives demonstrate the College\'s strong commitment to international education and exchange as an essential and integrated part of the undergraduate experience.

Job Summary

The Assistant Director for Health and Safety is a member of the senior leadership team in the Study Abroad program, reporting to the Director of Study Abroad. The Assistant Director provides leadership on the development of policies and procedures that support the safety and well-being of Study Abroad students, faculty, and staff. The Assistant Director also serves as the emergency contact for Study Abroad, carrying and responding to the Study Abroad emergency cell phone (a 24-hour on-call duty). As the Chair of the Study Abroad Risk and Security Assessment Committee (SARSAC), the Assistant Director conducts travel advisory meetings with students, reviews student petitions, and communicates the committee\'s decisions. The Assistant Director also provides broader input to other campus health and safety discussions upon request. In addition to the office-wide health and safety responsibilities, the Assistant Director manages an assigned portfolio of Study Abroad programs and/or grants and works with the Director on the establishment of new programs as needed. Additional responsibilities include liaising with the College Dean of Students Office, Student Wellness, UChicago CARES, Risk Management, Office of Legal Counsel, and other on-campus units; leading information sessions and other public presentations; and representing the office at conferences and events. This position requires the ability to travel domestically and internationally.

Responsibilities

Provides leadership on establishing practical and effective international health and safety standards, protocols, site reviews, and resources for Study Abroad programs and College students traveling with Summer International Travel Grant (SITG) support.

Helps develop best practices for pre-departure preparation and student resources related to health and safety abroad.

Monitors emerging trends, world events, and travel advisories in areas where Study Abroad students and summer grant recipients are present and provides information to the Director and other Study Abroad staff members to guide program planning.

Stays informed of University and higher education policy related to student health and safety in the international setting, including best practices from NAFSA and the Forum on Education Abroad.

Participates in relevant professional organizations and working groups (e.g., Overseas Security Advisory Council Academic Working Group, Pulse International network of higher education international health and safety professionals).

Drafts updates and warnings for inclusion on the Study Abroad webpage.

As the Chair of the Study Abroad Risk and Security Assessment Committee (SARSAC), conducts travel advisory meetings with students, reviews student petitions, and communicates the committee decisions.

Builds and aintains productive alliances with on- and off-campus stakeholders (e.g., local program staff, embassy and consular personnel, International SOS, Risk Management, Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Students, College Dean of Students staff, Pulse International, and Ivy Plus institutional counterparts).

Liaise with the Office of Risk Management on travel and emergency insurance services.

Tracks student health and safety incidents abroad and prepares reports and analyses of incident data for partner offices.

Manages portfolio of faculty-led study abroad programs and/or grants.

Manages all aspects of assigned direct enrollment programs and represents the office in program consortia.

Develops and updates location- and program-specific materials.

Chairs selection committees for assigned programs and evaluates student applications.

Communicates admissions decisions to students, managing occasionally complex reactions of students and their families, and manages wait lists for each program.

Works closely with on-site staff to share pertinent student and faculty needs; establish the program calendar, schedule, and excursions; identify and secure student housing, faculty housing, Graduate Assistant housing, and classroom space; and develop contingency plans.
