Manager Maintenance & Planning FPM

Your tasks and responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this role, Manager Maintenance & Planning FPM, are to:

  • Set a weekly operating schedule, plan and schedule maintenance activities to ensure sufficient manpower is available;

  • Distribute work orders and tasks amongst the craft-specific technicians;

  • Lead & participate in trouble-shooting activities with technicians when necessary;

  • Set the standard for acceptable cGMP work practices;

  • Set expectations for an acceptable end product, and routinely assess results through direct field verification;

  • Assess suitability and accuracy of routine Maintenance and ‘craft’ procedures, and provide feedback to the document owner (Technical System Owner (TSO) or Reliability Engineer;

  • Escalate any nonconformity immediately to the appropriate groups;

  • Review completed Work Orders for completion and compliance with Data Recording Rules;

  • Identify errors and works with technician to correct documentation;

  • Coach and train employees on their tasks and duties – focusing on, cGMP, appropriate escalation paths, 5S, Lean principles, SOP revisions, and a culture of continuous improvement;

  • Partner with Technical Training Specialist to ensure training curriculum is updated and training requirements are current;

  • Provide safety training regarding ergonomic issues, as well as on the job hazard analyses;

  • Fully investigate safety infractions or near-misses;

  • Accurately track time sensitive employee hours in the SAP TMW (time and attendance) system;

  • Ensure numbers are correct and submitted by the weekly deadline;

  • Perform functions in other databases associated with Purchase Requisitions (PRs) within SAP – interacting with external service providers as required, expense report management, staffing requirements – temporary or permanent, safety databases, and the approval of invoices;

  • Track monthly Key Performance Indicators for the department –analyzing trends or opportunities for improvement;

  • Seek to continually challenge the status quo, allowing for process improvements in efficiencies, while striving for standard work optimization;

  • Conduct external benchmarking required for the ‘craft’ practices, PMs and performance;

  • Research, identify, scope, and estimate materials, parts, labor, tools, equipment and external suppliers for maintenance task instructions;

  • Update SAP maintenance plans with job plans;

  • Ensure parts are available for maintenance plans, unplanned repairs and plant shutdowns through coordination with Maintenance Spare Parts group;

  • Create part requisitions as required for maintenance plans;

  • Update SAP BOM and Component list with revisions;

  • Coordinate with Central Shutdown Planner and support execution of plant maintenance shutdown schedules;

  • Schedule and coordinate maintenance work for all maintenance crafts including electricians, mechanics, instrumentation, HVAC, painting and carpentry as well as external vendors;

  • Attend weekly resource leveling meeting for shutdown to coordinate resources for planned work;

  • Provide effective leadership including: manage the development of employees, recognize and appreciate employee contributions, mitigate conflict and communication problems, plan and facilitate team activities, selecting personnel and motivating members of the functional area; support workforce diversity, quality and safety and support supervisors in the management of their employees/department which support achievement of individual / department / business objectives;

  • Partner with Central Maintenance, Technical System Owners, and Production to plan and schedule preventative, corrective and calibration maintenance work orders;

  • Hold weekly planning/scheduling meetings with Central Maintenance, Technical System Owners and Production Managers to determine short and long term priorities as well as routine maintenance and repairs;

  • Ensure complete and accurate records within SAP for parts, labor and maintenance plans;

  • Update maintenance plans with actual labor to continuously improve estimated resourced tasks;

  • Partner with TSOs to establish criticality matrixes regarding area specific equipment;

  • Define which Mechanical devices are more important than others;

  • Partner with site PCS and TSO to establish proper calibration tolerances, frequencies, standards and procedures – as well as their suitability;

  • Manage standards according to best practices and regulations;

  • Align electrical craft with upcoming site PMs, and outsources as necessary;

  • Ensure that Line Mechanics are cross trained to perform their unique functions in Fill and Freeze Drying, and the Packaging line from production stand point.

Your success will be driven by your demonstration of our LIFE values. More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Engineering or other applicable discipline;

  • B.S. and eight or more years of experience; OR

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience in managing a team of technically skilled employees– preferably in an aligned industry with bargaining unit environment;

  • Strong technical background;

  • Ability to shift priorities and effectively perform under pressure;

  • Demonstrated strong leadership capabilities;

  • Detailed knowledge and experience in Final Product Manufacturing, Visual Inspection, Packaging and Warehouse Processes is essential;

  • This includes the buildings associated with FPM processing, and how the ‘craft’ technicians interact with the equipment;

  • Must remain current in their field of expertise, assessing new equipment for applicability in our processes;

  • Must be able to convey this knowledge to the TSO / Engineering community, and be an effective change agent to adopt the accepted technology;

  • Must have proficient computer skills to include Microsoft office and SAP FAM (cMMS) transactions;

  • Significant depth and specialized techniques for, planning, coordinating critical path schedules and maintenance job plans in MS Project and SAP;

  • Requires good oral and written communication skills;

  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a wide customer base and the ability to effectively communicate with a team of Bargaining Unit employees;

  • Must drive process improvements – especially the push for an entirely paperless process;

  • Strong analytical strength is necessary in order to recognize and proactively respond to trending data in his or her field of expertise;

  • Must be able to coach his or her employees routinely on what an escalation process looks like for any non-conformities, and frequently field verify this requirement;

  • Strong planning and organizational skills;

  • Must be able to support FPM production buildings shutdowns with trained technicians – including the use of trained external contractors and meet routine and non-routine schedule commitments;

  • Must be able to support their team in the chosen direction through effective training, and field verification;

  • Must be able to troubleshoot equipment failures immediately and effectively communicate status to customers;

  • Must be able to gown into manufacturing suites;

  • Must be able to exhibit comprehensive understanding of the Collective Bargaining Units’ contract, administering discipline in a timely manner should it be necessary;

  • Working hours will closely mimic those employees that are being supervised;

  • Additional Qualifications for Focus Area: Mechanical:

  • Must be proficient in the use of Mechanical tools used by the Mechanical Technicians;

  • Must follow industry standards pertaining to Mechanical systems – identifying opportunities for local improvements;

  • Experience in process optimization is desirable – especially with regards to analyzing Mechanical PMs and opportunities to reduce complexity;

  • Additional Qualifications for Focus Area: Instrumentation and Electrical:

  • Must be proficient in the use of low to medium voltage systems;

  • Must understand new technology, and drive for the upgrading of existing technology in conjunction with the Site Metrology team;

  • Must have experience in industrial plant power distribution systems, both low and medium voltage;

  • Must have knowledge of low and medium voltage switchgear systems, including related protective devices and relays as well as low and medium voltage motor control systems, including solid state systems;

  • Must have knowledge of industrial control and protection schemes as they apply to electrical distribution systems, motor controls and electrical systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant experience in Technology, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering;

  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical and biotech production processes as well as good understanding of cGMP requirements, rules, and regulations.
