Job Summary

The Protection Relay and Control Engineer position is required to continue support of the LIPA transmission system Capital, NERC, and rapidly growing NYISO Q projects such as wind, solar and battery sites. The Engineer shall provide protection engineering to support Transmission studies and regulatory/OSA metric protection requirements.

Job Responsibilities

Major duties and responsibilities (include and are not limited to):

Develop or modify protective and control relaying schemes and engineering drawings for LIPA substations and system interties, applying applicable IEEE and PSEGLI standards.

Projects include new or upgraded transmission line and bus, transformer bank, and distribution feeder relaying, SCADA remote terminal units (RTUs), Digital Fault Recorders (DFRs), and operational telemetering equipment.

Prepare budget estimates and scope documents and specify and requisition all protection, operational metering and telemetering equipment, including relays, RTUs, DTRs, and other substation integration devices. Review all control related manufacturer and AE drawings

Develop construction specifications for field installation of the protection and control portion of all capital improvement projects as required.

Provide technical assistance to the operating departments with respect to the application and evaluation of relay and control equipment operation and support for emergencies.

​​​​​​​Update drawings to incorporate field changes and contribute to PSEGLI asset and document retention systems.

Contribute all details of time accounting to Workplan efforts, including expense and capital time.

Job Specific Qualifications

Required:

  • B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering

  • A minimum of 4 years relevant engineering experience

  • Must possess demonstrated analytical ability and problem-solving skills.

  • Must possess time management skills and have a demonstrated ability to work in both team and independent settings.

  • Must possess exceptional communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills, and a familiarity with the necessary interdepartmental interfaces, to ensure that strong working relationships are cultivated and maintained throughout the organization. In addition, must possess the ability to develop and deliver an informative and effective presentation.

  • Must be proficient in spreadsheet and database software (preferably MS Suite).

  • Participate in PSEGLI Emergency Storm restoration assignment when required.

Preferred / Desired Skills:

  • Electrical utility experience

  • Familiarity with the transmission and distribution systems

  • Able to read / understand electrical one line

  • Familiarity with Auto Cad or other drafting application
