Job Description

Senior Research Scientist II, Analytical Development and Operations

Foster City, California

This role is in the Analytical Sciences Team (AS) team within Analytical Development and Operations (ADO), based at our headquarters in Foster City, CA. The Analytical Sciences team is a multi-disciplined and innovative research team with a focus on implementing microscopy techniques to support Gilead’s parenteral product portfolio.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Microscopy analysis using stereo, polarized light and high-resolution digital microscopes and Raman, FTIR, and SEM microscopes for forensic analysis and particle characterization.

  • Perform elemental analysis using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS).

  • Development of quantitative methods using both microscopy and spectroscopy techniques to support control strategies.

  • Imaging surfaces and particles for container closure development and selection.

  • Lead a group of scientists and collaborate cross-functionally with teams in research, analytical development, device development, process chemistry and formulations development.

  • Independently plan, execute, and troubleshoot experiments that support development activities and project goals and stay current with regulatory guidelines and technologies.

  • Author and review scientific reports to support clinical manufacturing and development and publish research findings in high impact journals and present at pharmaceutical science conferences.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Chemistry/Biochemistry with 5+ years of experience; or MS/BS degree with extensive industry experience (9+ years for MS and 11+ years for BS).

  • Preferred Qualifications: PhD in Chemistry/Biochemistry with 7+years of relevant analytical experience; or MS/BS degree with extensive industry experience (15+ years for MS and 17+ years for BS).

  • Demonstration of strong communication, organization, and management (people and/or project) skills with a notable record of external publications.

  • Ability to work in particle-free environments (i.e., laminar flow hoods or other ISO 5 environments).

  • Experience with optical microscopy techniques and Raman, SEM and FTIR microscopes and corresponding sample preparation techniques.

  • Proficiency with XRPD for form quantitation and particle size analysis is also a plus.

  • Knowledge of cGMP and/or regulatory guidelines and hands-on experience in design, execution, and data analysis of laboratory experiments.

The salary range for this position is: $191,335.00 - $247,610.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
